Tips to become a successful Radio and Video Jockey

Both Video jockey (VJ) and Radio jockey (RJ) deal with music but while VJs present shows on TV, RJs do it on Radio. The more talkative and original you are, the better your chances of being successful in the field.

The work

Anchoring music shows, interacting with live audience and interviewing celebrities –all this look glamorous and fun but lot of hark work is also  involved here. These jockeys not only ply the music, but also tell us about the singers, the movie it is from, the actors in film etc..  The job is not just to read out vast portion of history but weave-in little details to hold the listener’s attention. The anchors must keep themselves up-to-date on the latest trends in music, all the latest videos and information about music stars and other celebrities. They should also have basic knowledge of everything from films to politics to travel, whatever the theme, the show demands. Often they are found doing promotions in road shows, doing voiceovers, endorsing products, anchoring talk shows, modeling, besides acting in serials and movies.

Education and skills

This is one of the few areas where you could do without any formal training. The field is basically talent-based. still a course in acoustics, voice modulation and sound recording will definitely be an added advantage for the right job.

Key skills

  • Excellent knowledge of music and general awareness.
  • A good voice and clear diction. On radio your style of speaking and voice is important, as you connect with people only through the voice.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to chat endlessly are definitely important.
  • For becoming a VJ, good screen presence, an attractive and photogenic appearance is the additional requirement.
  • A good sense of humour.
  • Correct pronunciation in both Hindi and English.

Some Institute

Remuneration

In the initial stages the earning is anything between Rs. 9,000 to Rs. 18,000 per month. There is no upper ceiling to what you can earn if you are popular with the viewers. You may be employed on a contract basis per show on a full time basis. Rate per show, can go up, depending on the kind of show you host –interactive, interview-based shows fetch more money.

Job prospects

Today, the entertainment industry is booming. The advent of FM on radio and private music  channels on TV has thrown open a host of opportunities, making RJing and VJing one of the hot job options.
But it is not easy to get a break, the field is flooded with competitors. You  can never be sure of permanency, life span of a VJ varies between 5-10 years, though RJs have better time span.
